Sing Dvorak's Stabat Mater with Adrian Partington

with Adrian Partington

Saturday 17th April 2010

Venue: St Monica Trust, Westbury-on-Trym

On a glorious summery April day, choral maestro Adrian Partington was our guest conductor when we held a 'Come and Sing' event at which the sound of Dvorak's magnificent Stabat Mater filled the grand hall at St Monica Trust. As Musical Director of the Bristol Choral Society Adrian probably needs no introduction to the choral music scene in the city, and we were grateful he found the time to lead our event in his busy diary. After brief introductions, Adrian got stuck in immediately, taking the 'Be More Musical' choir through a rigorous warm-up (below).

Dvorak's fabulous music then provided the 70-strong choir with plenty to work on and, with Steven Kings at the piano, it was already sounding good by the time we broke for tea. The St Monica's venue also features a lovely sunny 'Activities Room' where the choir enjoyed relaxing for a few minutes (and sampling some of the delicious cup cakes on offer!)

Many of our customers also booked to eat lunch at St Monica's restaurant, which provides a wide selection of food - on the menu for this day was home-made soup, a delicious quiche and some tasty chicken bites!

After lunch, and to prevent the potential 'siesta' (especially amongst those who had joined us for lunch!), Adrian had the choir jumping up and down with an impromptu rendition of 'The Grand Old Duke of York', before it was back to business. We were joined by four top-class soloists to add the cherry on the cake - Charlotte Newstead (Soprano), Alison Bell (Alto), Russell Burton (Tenor) and Jonathan Hyde (Bass) (seated on right in photo below).

The day moved to its climax when we welcomed a small audience to hear us sing through the parts of the piece the choir had learnt, and there was a real sense of occasion as Adrian introduced the concert and conducted the choir to new heights! Well done to everyone on the course - it sounded great. Thank you to Adrian Partington, Steven Kings, the four soloists and especially to all the members of the 'Be More Musical' choir for the day, see you next time!

A wonderful and enjoyable day... A great experience - inspiring tutor! ... Really enjoyable - could we have more?

It was well worth missing out on the beautiful weather!

What an excellent venue... Fine acoustics, beautiful garden which I'd never seen before... can we live here?

Lovely to be introduced to something different.

Adrian Partington oozes quality...
